Daun, Leopold Joseph Maria, Graf von (lā`ōpôlt yō`zĕf märē`ä gräf fən doun), 1705–66, Austrian field marshal. He gained distinction in the War of the Austrian Succession. Daun later reorganized the Austrian army and gave the officers corps a new sense of professionalism. In the Seven Years War he defeated the Prussian forces at Kolin (1757) and Hochkirch (1758) but was defeated at Torgau (1760) after being severely wounded.
