Name Origin: To honor France, ally of the American states in the Revolutionary War, by use of the hereditary title of the eldest son of the king of France, dauphin. Louis Joseph (1781-89), son of Louis XVI (1754-93) and Marie Antoinette (1755-93), was Area (sq mi): 557.53 (land 525.29; water 32.24). Pop per sq mi: 483.50. Pop 2005: 253,995. State rank: 15.
