In south-central PA, northwest of Lancaster; organized Mar 4, 1785 from Lancaster County. Name Origin: To honor France, ally of the American states in the Revolutionary War, by use of the hereditary title of the eldest son of the king of France, dauphin. Louis Joseph (1781-89), son of Louis XVI (1754-93) and Marie Antoinette (1755-93), wasdauphin at the time the county was established.
