In south-central PA, northwest of Lancaster; organized Mar 4, 1785 from Lancaster County. Name Origin: To honor France, ally of the American states in the Revolutionary War, by use of the hereditary title of the eldest son of the king of France, dauphin. Louis Joseph (1781-89), son of Louis XVI (1754-93) and Marie Antoinette (1755-93), was dauphin at the time the county was established.

Area (sq mi): 557.53 (land 525.29; water 32.24). Pop per sq mi: 483.50.
Pop 2005: 253,995. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.90%; 1990-2000 5.90%. Pop 2000: 251,798 (White 75.60%; Black or African American 16.90%; Hispanic or Latino 4.10%; Asian 2.00%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 4.10%. Median age: 37.90.
Income 2000: per capita $22,134; median household $41,507; Pop below poverty level: 9.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $29,473-$32,953.
Unemployment 2004: 4.90%. Change from 2000: 1.20%. Median travel time to work: 21.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 22.50%.
