Davenport, Harold

Davenport, Harold 

Born Oct. 30, 1907, in Accrington; died June 9, 1969, in Cambridge. English mathematician. Member of the Royal Society of London (1940) and president of the London Mathematical Society from 1957 to 1959.

Davenport was the author of works on the analytic theory of Diophantine equations. His most significant works were on the evaluation of trigonometric sums and characters in finite fields; these works have had an important influence on the contemporary algebraic theory of numbers.
