Davies, Samuel (dā`vēz), 1723–61, American Presbyterian clergyman, b. New Castle co., Del. Ordained as an evangelist, he went in 1747 to Hanover co., Va., where he was soon the center of a revival that became part of the movement known as the Great Awakening Great Awakening, series of religious revivals that swept over the American colonies about the middle of the 18th cent. Davies, Samuel (1723–61) Protestant clergyman, educator; born in New Castle County, Del. Ordained in 1747, he led the Great Awakening revival in Virginia, where he became a stout defender of the freedom of religious sects from the authority of the colony's established church. He attracted a large following as a preacher, and his sermons were widely published.
