Davis, Arthur

(pseudonym, Steele Rudd). Born Nov. 14, 1868, in Drayton; died Oct. 11, 1935, in Brisbane. Australian author.

Davis was the son of a small farmer. In the series of humorous stories On Our Selection (1895; separate edition, 1899; Russian translation, 1965) and in the collections Our New Selection (1903) and Sandy’s Selection (1904), Davis described the misfortunes and joys of the pioneer farmer family, the Rudds, in their struggle against harsh nature and poverty. The heroes of Davis’ other stories are similar to the Rudds. His works include On an Australian Farm (1910), The Dashwoods (1911), and On Emu Creek (1923). The collection Dad in Politics (1908) is a satire on the Australian parliament.
