Davos(dävôs`), town (1990 pop. 10,957), Grisons canton, E Switzerland, on the Landwasser River. A famous winter sports center, it originally became prominent in the 19th cent. as a health resort. Since 1971 (except for 2002–3), Davos has hosted the annual conference of what is now the World Economic Forum; the conference draws national leaders and business executives from around the world. There are several museums, including one devoted to Ernst Ludwig KirchnerKirchner, Ernst Ludwig
, 1880–1938, German expressionist painter and graphic artist. He studied art in Munich and was greatly impressed by the neoimpressionists. Kirchner studied Oceanic and other primitive sculpture at the Dresden Museum of Ethnology in 1904.

a city in eastern Switzerland, in the canton of Graubünden. Located in the Rhaetian Alps, 1,560 to 1,574 m above sea level, in a broad valley surrounded with high mountains and covered with pine forests and alpine meadows. There are about 13,000 permanent inhabitants.
Davos is a health resort with a climate characterized by many clear bright days, the absence of wind, and intensive solar radiation. It has a moderately mild winter (the average temperature in January is -7°C) and a moderately cool summer (the average temperature in July is I2.1°C); yearly precipitation is about 900 mm. Its medicinal facilities include climate therapy, solar and air baths, hydrotherapy, and electrotherapy. There is treatment of tuberculosis of the lungs and of chronic nontubercular diseases of the respiratory tract (bronchitis, pleurisy, and bronchial asthma). Sanatoriums, boarding houses, hotels, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, as well as the Institute of Medicine and Mountain Climate and the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, are located in Davos. Davos is an important center of foreign tourism and winter sports.
