In east-central NM, west of Clovis; organized Feb 28, 1917 from Chaves, Guadalupe, and Roosevelt counties. Name Origin: For Ezequiel Cabeza de Baca (1864-1917), lt. governor (1911-16) and governor (1917) who died after six weeks in office
