De Bary, Heinrich Anton (hīn`rĭkh än`tōn də bärē`), 1831–88, German botanist. He was professor at the universities of Freiburg in Breisgau (1855–66) and Halle (1867–72) and first rector of the Univ. of Strasbourg (from 1872). An authority on plant anatomy, he wrote several standard works in these fields and discovered sexual reproduction in fungi and the alternation of generations in rust fungi. His research established mycology as a science. In 1879, De Bary coined the word symbiosis. |
