De Duve, Christian René
Born Oct. 2, 1917, in Thames-Ditton, England. Belgian biochemist; member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and the Belgian Academy of Sciences. Graduated from the University of Louvain in 1941; he received his doctorate there in 1946 and taught from 1947 to 1951. In 1951 he became a professor at the university, and since 1962 he has been a professor at Rockefeller University in New York. De Duve’s work is on the biochemistry of glucagon and of insulin, which is used mainly as a medicinal preparation for treating sugar diabetes. He discovered lysosomes, which are intracellular formations containing various enzymes necessary for destruction and renewal of cell structures. WORKSGlucose, insuline et diabete.
