De Wet, Christiaan Rudolph

    0.01 sec.
De Wet, Christiaan Rudolph

Born Oct. 7, 1854, on the farm Leeuwkop; died Feb. 3, 1922, in Bloemfontein. Boer general and political leader.

De Wet took part in the 1880–81 war of the Boers against English colonialists attempting to seize the Transvaal. During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) he was one of the leaders of the Boer troops and partisan detachments. After the war he participated in a racist conspiracy with the English colonizers against the indigenous African population. In 1914, acting in the interests of Boer bourgeois nationalists, De Wet headed an uprising against British domination in the Union of South Africa. He withdrew from political life in the Union of South Africa after the English suppression of the uprising.
