In southwest-central FL, east of Sarasota; organized May 19, 1887 from Manatee County. Name Origin: For Hernando De Soto (c. 1500-42), Spanish explorer of southern U.S.

Pop 2005: 35,406. State rank: 48. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.90%; 1990-2000 35.00%. Pop 2000: 32,209 (White 61.20%; Black or African American 12.70%; Hispanic or Latino 24.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 13.50%). Foreign born: 18.70%. Median age: 36.50.
