In east-central TX, southeast of San Antonio; organized Mar 24, 1846 from Goliad, Gonzales, and Victoria counties. Name Origin: For Green C. De Witt (1787-1835), an early colonizer in Mexican Texas.

Area (sq mi): 910.47 (land 909.18; water 1.29). Pop per sq mi: 22.60.
Pop 2005: 20,507. State rank: 114. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.50%; 1990-2000 6.20%. Pop 2000: 20,013 (White 60.80%; Black or African American 11.00%; Hispanic or Latino 27.20%; Asian 0.20%; Other 12.30%). Foreign born: 2.60%. Median age: 40.10.
Income 2000: per capita $14,780; median household $28,714; Pop below poverty level: 19.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,456-$21,399.
