Debrecen, University of

 

(full name, L. Kossuth University of Debrecen), an institution of higher learning in the Hungarian People’s Republic. Located in Debrecen. Founded as a state university in 1912 from the departments of Debrecen College (founded in 1588). In 1949 the department of medicine was separated from the university, and the Medical University was created from it. In the same year, a department of natural sciences and mathematics was organized. In 1950 the university’s department of theology was reorganized as the Theological Academy.

In the 1970-71 academic year, the university had departments of humanities and philogy and of natural sciences and mathematics. In the same academic year, the university had more than 2,000 students and 277 faculty members. The university library (founded in 1916) had about 900,000 volumes in 1970.
