Born Jan. 8, 1862, in Roanne. died Oct. 4, 1914, in Aisne. French archaeologist.

Déchelette studied medieval painting and Gallo-Roman red-lacquer relief ceramics. From 1897 to 1901 he directed the excavations at the site of the ancient settlement in Mont Beuvray (Bibracte). He is the author of the multivolume Handbook of Prehistoric, Celtic, and Gallo-Roman Archaeology (vols. 1-6, 1908-34), based in large part on French material but giving a general classification and chronology of archaeological findings throughout Western Europe.
