decoherence [‚dē·kō′hir·əns] (quantum mechanics) The process whereby the quantum-mechanical state of any macroscopic system is rapidly correlated with that of its environment in such a way that no measurement on the system alone (without a simultaneous measurement of the complete state of the environment) can demonstrate any interference between two quantum states of the system. In the course of the development of quantum mechanics it has become clear that the concept of pure states is not sufficient when taking environmental influences causing decoherence effects into account. It's a made-to-order solution to the problem of decoherence and errors. After September 11, the tension between Convergence and Decoherence, 2001, which faced each other from opposite ends of the gallery, seemed eerily premonitory. |
