word processor
(1) Software that provides word processing functions on a computer.

(2) A computer specialized for word processing. Until the late 1970s, word processors were always dedicated machines. Today, computers have replaced almost all dedicated word processors.

A computer that is either dedicated to word processing or is used with a software package that supports word processing, together with a printer.
A person who operates such a device.

(text, tool)word processor - A program used to create and print (chiefly textual) documents that might otherwise be prepared on a typewriter. The key advantage of word processor is its ability to make changes easily, such as correcting spelling, changing margins, or adding, deleting, and relocating entire blocks of text. Once created, the document can be printed quickly and accurately and saved for later modifications.

Today most popular word processors, such as Microsoft Word, offer a much greater range of facilities than the first such programs.

Of course, there's nothing new about the appliance model of computing: dedicated word processors, games consoles and some early home computers such as the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A were all designed that way.
Early users groups Dedicated word processors were the productivity machines of the 1970s.
Their Stirling product, dedicated word processors, became obsolete and were replaced by the personal computers.
