Analyzing network traffic to discover the type of application that sent the data. In order to prioritize traffic or filter out unwanted data, deep packet inspection can differentiate data, such as video, audio, chat, voice over IP (VoIP), e-mail and Web. Inspecting the packets all the way up to layer 7 (see OSI model), it can be used to analyze anything and everything within the packet that is not encrypted. For example, it can determine not only that the data is a Web page, but also which Web site it comes from. See packet filter. How to thank TFD for its existence? While the functionality to perform deep packet inspection and operation may be common amongst various intelligent switch offerings, the switches typically differ on how fast (latency) they can perform these operations and how many operations they can perform (throughput) within a given period of time. 10GbE "Content-Aware" Deep Packet Inspection Platform Accelerates Deployment of Multi-Service Next Generation Networks SPA enhances security infrastructures with a signatureless Deep Packet Inspection solution capable of accurately identifying application layer exploits, botnet activity and rootkit behavior patterns - the primary tools of today's politically and criminally motivated attacker. |
