On the northwestern border of OH; organized Apr 7, 1845 from Williams, Henry, and Paulding counties. Name Origin: For Fort Defiance, built here 1794 by Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne (1745-96), and which he described as being so strong that he "defied hell and all her emissaries..." to take it
