Deisus
(also deists’, from the Greek deesis, praying), the Old Russian name for a composition depicting Christ in the center and the mother of god and John the Baptist turned toward him in prayerful poses. In iconography the deisus was originally executed on one board. Later, deisusy on three separate boards appeared, as well as deisusy executed in many parts. REFERENCELazarev, V. N.
