In NW corner of CA; organized Mar 2, 1857 from Klamath County. Name Origin: Spanish 'of the North,' for the county's position in the state.

Area (sq mi): 1229.75 (land 1007.81; water 221.94). Pop per sq mi: 28.50.
Pop 2005: 28,705. State rank: 48. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.40%; 1990-2000 17.30%. Pop 2000: 27,507 (White 70.10%; Black or African American 4.30%; Hispanic or Latino 13.90%; Asian 2.30%; Other 14.50%). Foreign born: 5.70%. Median age: 36.40.
Income 2000: per capita $14,573; median household $29,642; Pop below poverty level: 20.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,024-$18,893.
