The background for these changes was the fact that "the prospect of a unified, oil-rich, and democratic Yemen worried Yemen's northern neighbor, Saudi Arabia. However, on 22 May, membership dropped to 159 when Democratic Yemen and Yemen continued as a single Member, changing their name to Yemen. Council President Abdalla Saleh Al-Ashtal of the Democratic Yemen said that the matter would be considered further by the Council at a later date. |
