depilation [‚dep·ə′lā·shən]
(engineering)
Removal of hair from animal skins in processing leather.

Depilation

the removal of hair from a hide in the production of leather. Depilation usually consists of preliminary chemical or enzymatic weakening of the connection of the hair with the derma and subsequent processing of the hides on machines.

Depilation

the removal of the guard hairs from animal skins so that only uniform hairs that are fine, silky, lustrous, and downy remain on the surface of the coat. Depilation is applied to dressed, dyed, and clipped skins of such animals as rabbits and cats. The treatment imparts to the skins the appearance of a more valuable fur; skins that are dyed brown look like otter or nutria, and those that are dyed black look like seal.
