Des Plaines State Fish & Wildlife Area Location: In Will County in northeast Illinois, 10 miles south of Joliet and 55 miles southwest of Chicago, off I-55. Facilities: Class C campsites with water and pit toilets, 2 picnic areas, picnic shelter, playground, 2 boat ramps, handtrap range, archery range, dog field-trial training area. Activities: Camping, boating (10 HP maximum on backwaters, unlimited on river, no boats on Milliken lake), fishing, hiking, hunting, ice fishing. Special Features: The largest pheasant hunting facility in the state of Illinois is located at this site, and Milliken Lake, along with several ponds and river backwaters, offer panfish, catfish, and bass fishing. In addition, the Kankakee River borders the site on the south, with 3 miles of shoreline providing access to boating enthusiasts as well as walleye and northern pike fishing. The area also includes an 80-acre nature preserve containing remnants of natural prairie.
