Desktop Factory A 3D printer technology from 3D Systems. Originally developed by Desktop Factory, Inc., an IdeaLab company founded in 2004, it was acquired by 3D Systems in 2009. The Desktop Factory was designed to be the first, very affordable 3D printer at a breakthrough price of US$4995; however, as of the end of 2010, it had not come to market. Open source 3D printers are available in kit form at considerably less cost; however, geared to do-it-yourself enthusiasts, they have to be assembled and carefully maintained. In 2009, at roughly twice the cost of the Desktop Factory, 3D Systems launched its V-Flash 3D printer for making durable plastic parts up to 504 cubic inches in volume (Desktop Factory was projected at 125 cubic inches). See 3D printer and 3D printing.
