Developmental Mechanics
the division of biology that deals with the causative mechanisms of individual development. Developmental mechanics, founded in the 1880’s by the German scientist W. Roux, grew rapidly during the first third of the 20th century. The 1940’s saw the appearance of the new field of developmental biology, a result of the drawing together of developmental mechanics, cytology, genetics, embryology, experimental morphology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
