Deviatkov, Nikolai Dmitrievich 

Born Mar. 29 (Apr. 11), 1907, in Vologda. Soviet scientist in electronics. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1953) and Hero of Socialist Labor (1969).

Deviatkov graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1931. In 1925 he began working at the A. F. loffe Physicotechnical Institute; subsequently he worked at a number of other scientific research institutes. In 1954 he became scientific director of the division of superhigh-frequency electronics of the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1960 he became head of a subdepartment at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute. He has written a number of works devoted to the study of gas discharge and the development of gas-discharge instruments to protect communications lines against overvoltage and acoustical shocks. Deviatkov has been working on the development of superhigh-frequency instruments in the decimeter and millimeter ranges. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1949) and the Lenin Prize (1965), he has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
