In west-central OK, southwest of Enid; original county; organized 1892 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For George Dewey (1837-1917), who captured Manila (1898) during the Spanish-American War and was given the rank of Admiral of the Navy.

In north-central SD, north of Pierre; created as Rusk County in 1883 (prior to statehood); organized 1909 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For William Pitt Dewey (?-1900), surveyor general of the Dakota Territory (1873-77).
