Dezful (dĕzf
l`), city (1991 pop. 181,309), Khuzestan prov., SW Iran, on the Dez River, near the site of ancient Susa Susa , ancient city, capital of Elam. The site is 15 mi (23 km) SW of modern Dizful, Iran. The city gets its name, which means "citadel bridge," from a bridge built across the Dez by (according to legend) Shapur II. Dezful was a scene of rioting on the eve of the Iranian Revolution in 1978; it was attacked by Iraqi planes in the Iran-Iraq War Iran-Iraq War, 1980–88, protracted military conflict between Iran and Iraq. Click the link for more information. . The city is also known as Dizful and Desful. Dezful a city in southwestern Iran, on the Dez River (Shatt al Arab river basin) in Khuzistan Province. Population, 105,400 (1966). The city has rice-milling and cotton-ginning plants, as well as canneries. There is a handicraft industry producing carpets, leather, and other goods.
