[′pen‚tōs ′fäs‚fāt ′path‚wā]
(biochemistry)
A pathway by which glucose is metabolized or transformed in plants and microorganisms; glucose-6-phosphate is oxidized to 6-phosphogluconic acid, which then undergoes oxidative decarboxylation to form ribulose-5-phosphate, which is ultimately transformed to fructose-6-phosphate.
