special mixtures of nutrient substances on which microorganisms are grown to determine the species to which they belong. Among such media are protein media used to ascertain the hemolytic and proteolytic activities of microbes, media containing carbohydrates and indicators showing change in acidity (through the microbes using these compounds), and media containing substances providing nutriment for only certain kinds of bacteria.
