differential scanning calorimetry [‚dif·ə¦ren·chəl ¦skan·iŋ ‚kal·ə′rim·ə·trē] (analytical chemistry) A method in which a sample and a reference are individually heated (by separately controlled resistance heaters, at a predetermined rate), and enthalpic (heat-generating or -absorbing) processes are detected as differences in electrical energy supplied to either the sample or the reference material to maintain this heating rate. This difference in electrical energy, in milliwatts per second, of the heat flow into or out of the sample is due to the occurrence of a physical or chemical process. An attempt has been made to apply a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique to understand the state of cure (including over cure) of tire tread compounds. This new method reportedly delivers much greater sensitivity than conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Differential scanning calorimetry data also suggests that molding sand prepared by vacuum mixing and cooling has a tendency to release its water more consistently than molding sand prepared by conventional mixing at atmospheric pressure, probably due to more consistent hydration of the clay interlayers. |
