Digital Library Initiative - A project to research digital libraries which aims to provide real collections to real users (high school students, University researchers and students, users in public libraries). The project is sponsored jointly by three US federal funding agencies, led by the National Science Foundation.

The University of Michigan, one of the six sites selected in 1994 to collaborate, will provide collections on earth and space sciences. The project, known there as the University of Michigan Digital Library Project (UMDL), is a large, multi-year project headed by Daniel Atkins, Dean of the School of Information and Library Studies.

Steve Morris is Head of Digital Library Initiatives as North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries and has worked for the past dozen years in the area of facilitating access to geospatial data.
The Preservation, Reliability, Interoperability, Security, Metadata (PRISM) (13) project [29] of the Cornell University is a 4 year project funded by the Digital Library Initiative to investigate and develop policies and mechanisms needed for information integrity in digital libraries.
Additional CAP partners include The New York Public Library, one of the most renowned libraries in the country; Project Gutenberg, the Web's oldest producer of free electronic books; University of Michigan's OAIster project, which provides hard to find academic collections; UCLA's Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI) with content documenting Babylonian history back to 3500 B.
