digital-to-analog conversion

digital-to-analog or D/A conversion, the process of changing discrete digital data into a continuously varying signal in relation to a standard or reference. There are two types of converters: electromechanical—also called shaft- or position-to-digital—and electronic. An example of electromechanical conversion is a positioning mechanism, such as a strip-chart recorder. The most common use of an electronic converter is to present the output of a digital computer computer, device capable of performing a series of arithmetic or logical operations. A computer is distinguished from a calculating machine, such as an electronic calculator, by being able to store a computer program (so that it can repeat its operations and make

digital-to-analog conversion (DAC)

Process by which digital signals (which have a binary state) are converted to analog signals (which theoretically have an infinite number of states). For example, a modem converts computer digital data to analog audio-frequency signals that can be transmitted over telephone lines.

A chapter on advanced assembly language programming structured around computer arithmetic topics is followed by treatment of fundamental microcontroller interfacing topics such as parallel IO, asynchronous serial IO, synchronous serial IO, interrupt-driven IO, timers, analog-to-digital conversion, and digital-to-analog conversions.
The CX9041X coprocessors also enable the easy implementation of Foreign Exchange Office (FXO) applications by interfacing to Conexant's CX20493 worldwide SmartDAA device for public switched telephone network (PSTN) line interface and analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion.
With direct digital connection to the computer, the loss of signals that are characteristic of digital-to-analog conversions are minimized, allowing for superior picture quality.
