Dillon, John, 1851–1927, Irish nationalist. A supporter of Charles Stewart Parnell Parnell, Charles Stewart , 1846–91, Irish nationalist leader. Haughty and sensitive, Parnell was only a mediocre orator, but he possessed a marked personal fascination and was a shrewd political and parliamentary tactician.

, he entered Parliament in 1880 and was arrested several times for his advocacy of boycotting and agrarian agitation. After the Parnell divorce scandal, Dillon led the anti-Parnell faction until the Nationalist party was reunited (1900) under the leadership of John Redmond Redmond, John Edward, 1856–1918, Irish nationalist leader. He was elected to Parliament as a Home Rule member in 1881 at the height of the obstructionist program of Charles Parnell.

. During World War I, Dillon incurred the enmity of Sinn Fein by encouraging military recruiting in Ireland in spite of his opposition to conscription. He succeeded (1918) Redmond in the leadership of the Nationalist party, but his career came to an end after the Sinn Féin Sinn Féin [Irish,=we, ourselves], Irish nationalist movement. It had its roots in the Irish cultural revival at the end of the 19th cent. and the growing nationalist disenchantment with the constitutional Home Rule movement.
