The rotten-egg smell is caused by a gas known as dimethyl sulfide. Confined to her bunk to recuperate from her injury, she realized she could easily smell the dimethyl sulfide (DMS) that an atmospheric chemist on board was using for experiments. Many types of marine algae produce a substrate called dimethlysulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which is broken down chemically into dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and acrylate by an enzyme called DMSP lyase. |
