Aleksidze, Dimitrii Aleksandrovich 

Born Feb. 23 (Mar. 8), 1910, in Tiflis. Soviet stage director. People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR (1955). Member of the CPSU since 1954.

Aleksidze graduated from the faculty of stage management at the State Institute of Theater Arts (GITIS) in 1934. He was a stage director since 1936, and has been the chief stage director since 1959 of the Sh. Rustaveli Georgian Theater (Tbilisi). His productions include Shanshiashvili’s The Heroes Krtsanisi (1943), Mrevlishvili’s Nikoloz Baratashvili (1949), Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex (1956), Kvarkvare Tutaberi (1959), and Bakhtrioni, which is based on a work by Vazha Pshavela (1960). He has been working in the Ukrainian theater since 1964. There his productions include Sophocles’ Antigone (1965), Kulish’s Sonata Pathétique (1966) at the I. Franko Theater, and Lavrenev’s The Breakup (1967) at the Lesa Ukrainka Kiev Theater. From 1939 to 1964 he taught at the Georgian Theater Institute. He wrote the book Problems of an Actor’s Education (1956, in Georgian). He has been awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
