Dimitrije Tucovic

Tucović, Dimitrije 

Born May 1, 1881, in Uzice; died Nov. 20,1914. Figure in the Serbian workers’ movement.

Tucovic studied in the faculty of law of the University of Belgrade. From 1902 to 1905 he was a member of the editorial staff of the newspaper Radnicke novine, the organ of the Serbian Social Democrats. He helped found the Serbian Social Democratic Party (SSDP) in 1903. He was a member of the Central Administrative Board (Central Committee) of the SSDP from 1903 to 1908 and became the secretary of the party in 1908.

From Marxist positions, Tucovic fought against opportunists and anarchosyndicalists. He was the editor of the journal Borba, the theoretical organ of the SSDP, from 1910 to 1914. He wrote articles and pamphlets devoted to the development of the political program, the strategy, and the tactics of the SSDP. He translated K. Marx’s Wage Labor and Capital into Serbian.

Tucovic took part in the First Balkan Socialist Conference in 1909 and the Copenhagen congress of the Second International in 1910. He died during World War I at the front in the Drina region.
