Dimo, Nikolai Aleksandrovich 

Born Nov. 18 (30), 1873, in the city of Orgeev; died Mar. 15, 1959, in Kishinev. Soviet soil scientist. Academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1948). Member of the CPSU from 1949.

Dimo graduated from the Novo-Aleksandriia Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in 1902. His principal works were devoted to the geography of soils and the salinization, biology, physics, and melioration of soils in the central regions of the European USSR as well as in Middle Asia, Transcaucasia, and Moldavia. One of the founders of the Middle Asian University and the University of Kishinev, he was director of the Middle Asian Scientific Research Institute of Soil Science and Plant Geography (1920-31) and the Institute of Soil Science of the Moldavian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1957-59). Dimo was a deputy and member of the second, third, and fourth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and three other orders as well as medals of the USSR and the V. V. Dokuchaev Gold Medal.
