Dingley, Nelson

Dingley, Nelson (dĭng`lē), 1832–99, U.S. congressman (1881–99), b. Durham, Maine. For many years the editor of the Lewiston (Maine) Journal, he was also a state official, serving as governor of Maine (1874–75). His service in the House of Representatives was marked chiefly by his preparation of the highly protective tariff measure called the Dingley Act, which replaced (1897) the Wilson-Gorman Act and remained in force until 1909.
Dingley, Nelson (1832–99) U.S. representative; born in Durham, Maine. A Dartmouth College graduate, editor of the Lewiston Evening Journal, he was a protectionist Republican congressman from Maine (1881–99) who sponsored the Dingley Tariff, imposing heavy import taxes.
