Dinnik, Aleksandr Nikolaevich 

Born Jan. 19 (31), 1876, in Stavropol’; died Sept. 22, 1950, in Kiev. Soviet scientist in mechanics and the theory of elasticity. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946), Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the Ukrainian SSR (1943).

Dinnik graduated from the University of Kiev in 1899 and was a professor at the Dnepropetrovsk Mining and Metallurgical, institutes from 1914 through 1941 and at the University of Kiev from 1944. His research concentrated on the stability of structural elements, especially rods and arches, the stability of and fluctuations in plates and membranes, and the application of elasticity theory to problems of underground pressure in mining work. Dinnik was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
