Dinosaur National Monument

National preserve, northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah, U.S. It was set aside in 1915 to preserve rich fossil beds that include dinosaur remains. It was enlarged in 1938 and again in 1978 to its present 330 sq mi (855 sq km). It protects the canyons of the Green and Yampa rivers, which contain highly coloured geologic formations.

Size: 210,278 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on October 4, 1915.
Location: In northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah. Visitor center is 2 miles east of Dinosaur, CO, off US 40.
Facilities: Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Camping, hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, fishing, auto touring.
Special Features: Spectacular canyons were cut in this area by the Green and Yampa rivers through upfolded mountains. The quarry here is the single most important Jurassic dinosaur paleontological site anywhere. The monument also has a nearly complete stratigraphic geological record.
