dioctyl phthalate

[dī¦äkt·əl ′tha‚lāt]
(organic chemistry)
(C8H17OOC)2C6H4 Pale, viscous liquid, boiling at 384°C; insoluble in water; used as a plasticizer for acrylate, vinyl, and cellulosic resins, and as a miticide in orchards. Abbreviated DOP.

Dioctyl Phthalate

the di-n-octyl ester of orthophthalic acid, C6H4(COOC8H17)2; a colorless oily liquid with a boiling point of 340° C. Refractive index n20D 1.482. It is insoluble in water but is miscible with benzine and mineral oils. It is made from n-octyl alcohol and phthalic anhydride in the presence of acid catalysts. Dioctyl phthalate is a plasticizer for polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, and other plastics.
