Dionysios the Philosopher, Rebellion of (1611)

an anti-Turkish rebellion in Greece under the leadership of Dionysios, the metropolitan of Larisa, who was called The Philosopher because of his learning.

As early as 1600, Dionysios had prepared an anti-Turkish outbreak, but he was compelled to leave Greece. While in Western Europe, Dionysios established ties with the Spanish government, which promised him military aid. After returning to Epirus, Dionysios raised a rebellion in 1611. In September of that year detachments of the insurgents were defeated when they attempted to seize the fortress of the city of loannina. Dionysios was captured and executed.
