Bouts, Dierick
Bora circa 1415 in Haarlem; died May 6, 1475, in Louvain. Dutch painter. Bouts probably studied under Roger van der Weyden; he also was influenced by J. van Eyck. In his paintings (the altarpiece Mystery of the Eucharist, 1464–67, St. Pieterskirk, Louvain; the diptych The Judgment of Otto III, Museum of Ancient Art, Brussels) the exalted and the commonplace are interwoven and the conventions of Gothic techniques (vertical rhythm, elongation of figures) are combined with the persuasiveness of depiction and precision of observations (portrayed persons, genre motifs, interiors, and still life, as well as landscapes imbued with a lyrical feeling). REFERENCEDenis, V. Thierry Bouts. Brussels, 1957.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
