discharging arch [′dis‚chärj·iŋ ‚ärch]
An arch, usually segmental and often a blind arch, built above the lintel of a door or window to discharge the weight of the wall above the lintel to each side.
(civil engineering)
A support built over, and not touching, a weak structural member, such as a wooden lintel, to carry the main load. Also known as relieving arch.
