The Bon Marché in Paris, which began as a small shop in the early 19th century, is often considered the first department store. The first U.S. department store chains— J.C. Part of the reason for this retail phenomenon is that when the economy begins to falter, there is an entire segment of value and discount retailers who are able to jump in and take the place of the luxury retailers who enjoyed the riches of a thriving economy. H&M joins a slew of upscale retailers such as Coach, Burberry and Nordstrom and discount retailers such as Target and Payless ShoeSource. Minneapolis-based Target, whose stores have traditionally been stand-alone or major anchors at discount retailers, purchased a Macy's location in the Westminster Malt and a Robinsons-May store in the Glendale Galleria. |
