Students investigate problems set in real-life contexts within an integrated curriculum that includes algebra and functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and discrete mathematics. High schools have made some progress in this area, say Fred Roberts, director of the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, a consortium based at Rutgers University that's been involved in math-science interfaces for more than a decade. He was one of the century's greatest mathematicians, who posed and solved thorny problems in number theory and other areas and founded the field of discrete mathematics, which is the foundation of computer science. |
