disk imageA file that contains a copy of a disk drive, copied bit for bit from the original. Disk images are used to replicate the entire contents of a disk to one or more other disks. Currently there are two methods of accomplishing this: disk image recovery and file level recovery. Except for a few planetary fly-bys, such as Galileo, NASA has not deployed a spacecraft to provide the public with a full disk image of the Earth since Apollo.
