disk stripingThe spreading of data over multiple disk drives to improve performance. Data are interleaved by bytes or blocks of bytes across the drives. For example, with four drives and a RAID controller that simultaneous reads and writes all drives, four times as much data is read or written in the same time frame as a system without striping. Disk striping does not provide fault tolerance, but is often used in conjunction with disk mirroring to provide both speed and safety. See RAID. disk striping [′disk ‚strīp·iŋ] (computer science) The distribution of a unit of data over two or more hard disks, enabling the data to be read more quickly. Also known as data striping.

RAID-5 arrays, for instance, provide disk striping with parity, guaranteeing that if a disk fails, it can be replaced and rebuilt from the data and parity information on the remaining disks. Disk striping does not store redundant data across the disk array; rather, it uses a system of parity checks--or hash totals--to rebuild lost data should one drive in the array fail. Storage methodologies supported by the chip's dual SATA disk interface include disk striping (RAID0), disk mirroring (RAID1) and disk spanning. |
